Harry was a phenomenal mentor for me, and was the reason I went to Berkeley for my PhD. I owe my career to him. Harry gave strong guidance while at the same time enough rope to hang myself with--which I did a few times! I’m trying to decide which story to tell--there are so many. I could recount how he helped me get out of trouble when I was falsely accused of disrespecting a cadaver in a human anatomy lab, but I can’t remember many details other than the look on his face when I came into his office. I can still see him shaking his head and saying something like, “You’ve only been here for a month and already in trouble...”  When I was a TA for herpetology there an incident involving midnight skinny dipping in a cistern near Dorner’s Camp and an angry rancher with a shotgun, but I’m sure Harry doesn’t want to revisit that. Or maybe I should tell everyone how around April 1st, 1991 I started a rumor that Harry got a rattlesnake tattoo on his bum after having a few too many at a bar, but would deny it if asked because the tattoo artist drew a C. atrox instead of a molossus. But all joking aside, my best memory from my time at the MVZ was a two hour meeting with Harry where we talked about what I thought was interesting about geckos. He asked me questions, did a lot of listening, and I came out of his office with a wonderful dissertation topic. Thanks for everything, Harry! Enjoy your retirement--you have earned it 100 times over.
